Michael Dorsey (Dustin Hoffman) is an unemployed actor having trouble finding work. In a moment of last-minute desperation, he dresses as a woman - Dorothy Michaels - and lands a major part in a daytime New York soap-opera. Dorsey loses himself in his character and essentially becomes Dorothy Michaels, captivating women all around the city and inspiring them to break free from the control of men and become more like Dorothy. This newfound role, however, lands Dorsey in a hot spot between a female friend/'lover,' a female co-star he falls in love with, that co-star's father who falls in love with him, and a male co-star who yearns for his affection. Also stars Jessica Lang, Teri Garr, Dabney Coleman, Charles Durning, and Bill Murray.

Dorothy (Judy Garland) lives on a farm in Kansas until a cyclone arrives and picks her, her house, and her dog Toto up and deposits them in the land of Oz. Things in Oz are strange and beautiful, but Dorothy just wants to get back home. From Munchkin-land, she begins a journey to the Emerald City where she's told the great Wizard of Oz (Frank Morgan) lives. On her way she meets a Scarecrow (Ray Bolger) who needs a brain, a Tin Man (Jack Haley) who wants a heart, and a Cowardly Lion (Bert Lahr) who desperately needs courage. They all hope the Wizard of Oz will help them before the Wicked Witch of the West (Margaret Hamilton), who blames Dorothy for the death of her sister, catches up with them. This is a classic not to be missed.

Follow the life of Celie Johnson (Whoopi Goldberg) as she struggles through life in the early 1900s. The film begins with Celie about 17 years old, giving birth to her second child, sired by her father. Her father takes the child away and tells Celie never to tell anyone about it. Time passes and a local farmer, "Mister" (Danny Glover), comes by to marry Celie's younger, prettier sister, Nettie (Akosua Busia). Her father refuses to let Nettie marry and gives the man Celie instead. Mister neglects and abuses Celie until Nettie comes by asking to stay with them, because the father can't keep his hands off her. When Mister is unable to lure Nettie, he sends her away, leaving Celie more distraught than ever. Meanwhile, Mister's lover, Shug Avery (Margaret Avery), comes to visit and befriends Celie, helping her to understand that she is more than Mister's servant. The movie culminates when Celie is reunited with Nettie and her two children in a heartfelt ending to an extraordinary film.
